UK Watchdog (CMA) Alarmed by Big Tech’s AI Dominance Concerns

CMA

The dominance of major technology companies in the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence (AI) market is a significant cause for concern, according to warnings from the competition regulator.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is currently investigating the emergence of powerful AI tools known as foundation models. These encompass a variety of applications including text and image generation, exemplified by platforms like ChatGPT.

A detailed examination by the CMA revealed a complex network of AI partnerships involving industry giants such as Google, Apple, Microsoft, Meta (formerly Facebook), Amazon, and chip-maker Nvidia.

Sarah Cardell, the chief executive of the CMA, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “When we started this work, we were curious. Now, with a deeper understanding and having watched developments very closely, we have real concerns.”

Highlighting the fundamental challenge at hand, Cardell articulated, “The essential challenge we face is how to harness this immensely exciting technology for the benefit of all, while safeguarding against potential exploitation of market power and unintended consequences.”

These warnings were delivered by Ms. Cardell in a speech delivered on Thursday in Washington.

The CMA’s investigation revealed that a select few incumbent technology giants, already wielding significant influence in key digital markets, are now leading the charge with foundation models. These models, trained on extensive datasets, form the backbone of tools that are reshaping workplaces and various facets of contemporary life.

A recent study identified over 90 linked investments and collaborations among a select group of tech giants. This scrutiny coincides with an ongoing examination by regulators into Microsoft’s extensive partnership with OpenAI, valued in the billions. Despite acknowledging the substantial resources, expertise, and innovation potential these conglomerates possess, the watchdog asserts that such influence should not shield them from competition.
