✨ Getting Started with Microsoft Word

Welcome to your first step into the world of Microsoft Word — your digital notepad, report writer, CV builder, and content creator all in one.

What is Microsoft Word & Why Use It?

Microsoft Word is a word processing program used to type, edit, format, and print professional documents. From school assignments and business letters to flyers and ebooks — if it has text, Word can handle it!

Quick Think - Can you name 3 documents you use or see often that might be created with Word?

Opening and Closing a Document

  • To open Word: Double-click the Word icon or search “Word” on your computer.

  • To open a document: Go to File → Open, then choose your file.

  • To close it: Click the X at the top-right corner or go to File → Close.

Tip - Word auto-saves if you`re using OneDrive!

Explore the Word Interface

When Word opens, here’s what you’ll see:

  • Ribbon: The big toolbar at the top with tabs like Home, Insert, and Layout.

  • Toolbar (Quick Access): Top-left icons like Save, Undo, and Redo.

  • Status Bar: At the bottom — shows page number, word count, and more.

Try This - Can you find where to change the font size or make your text bold?

Creating a New Document

Starting fresh?
Click File → New → Blank Document.
You’ll get a clean page to type on. Time to bring your ideas to life!

Mini Challenge:

  1. Open Microsoft Word.

  2. Create a new blank document.

  3. Type your name, today`s date, and one goal for learning Word.

  4. Save it as MyFirstWordDoc.docx.

Note - Learning Word is like learning to ride a bike the more you practice, the smoother it gets.
