How to prepare a university industrial training report

My Advice and Experiences

In preparing your industrial training report, be sincere about your experiences and write them all in a book and then transfer as your report. It`s not something you should be scared of telling your teachers or lecturers.

They don`t know all and want to learn from your experience also. So always tell yourself that three months is enough to give a better report and get an A for your report.

Preparing your report is so easy because your experience is what you give and not someone else`s own.

You must ask yourself these questions:

  • Have I had an experience yet to start preparing this report?
  • Where should I start?
  • Is my place of training well for my course?
  • What information should I include or remove?
  • What`s my title/topic?
  • When should I create the report?
  • What guidelines should I follow?
  • How can I make my report look good?
  • Should I include images?
  • How do format my report? and more.

Answering these questions will help you draft the procedure section of your report and makes it easier for you to give the detailed information needed.

Here are some tips to prepare your industrial training report:

Step 1:

On the first day of your training, get a notebook, write down the day`s date, firm location, number of staff, your assignments, questions you were asked, how the environment looks, what you learned that day. At the end of the day, read your Institute requirement instructions and any other information you`ve been given about the report, and think about the purpose of the report. Note that some of the information you wrote down will be repeated each day of your training because you will need them for your report.

Step 2:

Before returning to your institute to defend your industrial training, make sure you had at least 3 weeks of rest and compiling your daily activities from your notebook to your main report. Remember, not all the information you wrote is needed. What exactly is needed? Make sure the name of the firm is included, your major activities, any discovery you made, image of a product you made or type of service you offer, what you experienced from the people around you and the environment, your new idea to the firm and the names of some special people that trained you (your supervisor may know the person) and decide to confirm and get good recommendation from he/she.

Step 3:

State reasons why you chose the firm to do your training. Include short information about the firm or who it`s aimed at. Make sure the information provided is relevant and appropriate. Check the report requirements and guidelines and the marking schedule to make sure you`re on the right track. If you`re not sure how the marks will be assigned to contact your teacher, someone who has done it before or even your lecturer.

Step 4:

Decide on the structure and steps you will take when you`re defending your industrial training experience. Note that reports generally may have similar steps and structures. But some details may differ because your activities with someone else can never be the same. Get a few materials, items or products used during your training to determine if it`s a research report, computer report, laboratory report, business report, investigative report, etc. Prove to your lecturers you had an experience.

Step 5:

The length of the report be must focused on. It must be too short or too long depending on the type of report, the structure can include:

  • A Cover page (Title Page).
  • Dedication or Acknowledgement.
  • Abstract.
  • Table of Contents.
  • An introduction.
  • A short history of the firm
  • Experiences & Findings.
  • Conclusions & Recommendations.

Note that:
You must include photos, tables or graphs to make your report more readable and/or easier to follow.

Give your write up good formatting. Ensure you include enough information needed, your recommendations should be written as a numbered list, and ordered from most to least important.
