How to Detect Image File Formats Responsive Web Design
By Francis Anthony In Basic Computer Training On 11th March 2020
Working with images can be complicated sometimes. There are so many image format file and we want to be careful while saving and changing files because each image format has its purpose.
Hopefully, this post gives a better understanding of the standard image format file types and which are most appropriate for your design project.
A file type refers to a name given to a specific kind of file. Every file has a format. For example, a Microsoft PowerPoint document and an Adobe Photoshop document are two different file types with .ppt for PowerPoint file type and .psd for Photoshop file type. These documents are associated with different applications and therefore the application creates its own distinction for its document. Other file types, (not images) such as rich text RTF files. MP4 Video files, MP3 audio files and many more are standard file types that can be opened by multiple programs.
10 File Formats Explained
JPEG or JPG(s) might be the most common file type you run across on the web, and more than likely the kind of image that is in your company`s MS Word version of its letterhead. JPGs are known for their "lossy" compression, this simply means that the quality of the image decreases as the file size decreases.
You can use JPGs for your web projects, in Microsoft Office documents, or for projects that require printing at a high resolution. Paying attention to the resolution and file size with JPGs is essential in order to produce a nice-looking design project.
These file types are amazing for interactive documents such as web pages, but they aren`t suitable for printing. While PNGs are "lossless," meaning you can edit them and still maintain their quality, they are still low-resolution images.
The major reason why most web designers use PNGs in most web projects is that you can save your image with more colors on a transparent background. This makes for a much sharper and web-quality image.
GIFs image format are common in their animated form. In their more basic form, GIFs are made up from up to 256 colors in the RGB colorspace. Due to the limited number of colors, the file size is always low.
This is a common file type for most web projects because an image needs to load very quickly while connecting as opposed to one that needs to retain a higher level of quality.
TIFs image file are large raster file that does not lose quality. These file types are known for using "lossless compression,". This simply means that the original image data is maintained regardless of how often you might copy, re-save, or compress the original file.
Despite TIFF images` ability to recover their quality after manipulation, it`s not advisable to use on a website or web app. so as to avoid slow response on web apps. instead, use it for saving photographs for prints.
PSDs files are file formats created and saved in Adobe Photoshop. This type of file can be opened with Photoshop, and it contains different components like layers, filters, and more. This makes modifying the image much easier to handle.
PDFs were invented by Adobe with the purpose of capturing and reviewing rich information from any application, on any device, with anyone and anywhere.
A vector image that is saved in PDF format can be viewed without any design editing software or even a browser, and you have the ability to use this file to make further manipulations.
EPS refers to a file in vector format that`s designed to produce high-resolution graphics for print. You can create an EPS file format with almost any kind of design software.
EPS extension is more of a universal file type that can be used to open vector-based artwork in any design editor. This safeguards file transfers to many designers that are not yet utilizing Adobe products but maybe using Corel Draw or others.
A RAW image format is the least processed image file type, it`s the first format a picture inherits when it`s created. When a photo is taken with a camera, it`s saved immediately into a raw file format, during the process, every element of the photo is compiled without losing ANY details. Then when you upload your media to a new device and edit it using an image software then the format changes to any one of the other image formats.
Adobe illustrator is the industry standard for creating artwork from scratch. Illustrator produces vector artwork, which is the easiest type of file to manipulate. It can also create all of the other file types mentioned in this post.
An INDD (Indesign Document) are files that are created and saved in Adobe Indesign. Indesign is a simple software, commonly used to create larger publications, such as books, newspapers, magazines, eBooks and more.
Do you know that files from both Adobe Photoshop and Adobe illustrator can be combined in Indesign to produce content rich designs that feature advanced typography, page content, embedded graphics, formatting information and many other sophisticated layout-related options.
There are many file types, you can check the "Save As" options in many design softwares and test the different file format listed.
